Synology DX517 5-Bay NAS Expansion Unit

The Synology DX517 expansion unit provides five additional drive bays for Synology DiskStation systems, supporting up to 80TB of raw storage capacity. Compatible with both 3.5" and 2.5" SATA drives, including HDDs and SSDs, this expansion unit offers flexible storage scaling for growing data needs.

Seamless Storage Expansion

Managed directly through DiskStation Manager (DSM) on the host NAS, the DX517 integrates immediately upon connection. Online volume expansion allows storage growth without interrupting existing services or requiring system downtime. The expansion unit synchronizes with the host DiskStation for automatic power management.

Hot-Swappable Drive Configuration

The DX517 features screwless, hot-swappable drive trays that enable drive installation and replacement without powering down the system. This design reduces maintenance time and simplifies drive management during capacity upgrades or drive failures.

Local Backup Solution

When configured as a separate volume, the DX517 serves as a dedicated local backup destination for the host DiskStation. This configuration provides protection against system failure by maintaining backup data on independent drives within the expansion unit.

Wide Model Compatibility

The DX517 supports numerous Synology DiskStation models from the 15 through 23 series, including DS923+, DS1522+, DS1821+, DS1621xs+, DS920+, DS720+, DS1819+, DS918+, and many others. Compatibility includes both multi-unit volume creation and single-unit configurations depending on the host model.

The unit measures 157mm x 248mm x 233mm and weighs 3.91kg. It operates on a 200W power supply with 100-240V AC input, consuming 29.9W during access and 2.4W during HDD hibernation. Two 80mm system fans maintain operating temperatures between 5°C and 40°C with noise levels at 21.5 dB(A). Synology DX517 can be used as a dedicated local backup solution for the Synology DiskStation. When created as a separate volume, the DX517 provides a great backup solution to its local hard disks in case of system failure.
